The “Wait, what?” sentence I read today:
Well, I’m not talking about the War to Make the World Safe for Democracy (World War I), the War to End Fascism (World War II) or even the Cold War, which ultimately brought down the Evil Empire, at least temporarily. (emphasis mine)
What the hell? Raise your hand if you think the Soviet Union is going to make a comeback. That’s what I thought. C’mon, this has to qualify as fundamental foreign policy unseriousness. Diana West needs to concern herself less with “The Death of the Grown Up” and more with the permissive nature of opinion journalism. Apparently, anyone with a B.A. in English can publish their personal sociological musings and political ramblings. Wait, on second thought–score!
The Kojo Nnamdi Show did and interview with her on Tuesday, August 28th. Apparently because I have read Harry Potter I am contributing to the demise of the responsible American society. Oh God, how dare I! Additionally, her comments about the use of the jihad would be comical if they weren’t so incredibly misguided.
While I sympathise with the idea of the loss of maturity in many “adults” today, West’s ideas about what constitutes maturation are so arbitrary and bizarre that it leads her to believe that America has been left “open to an insidious Islamization of culture.” It saddens me that such intellects as George Will proclaim: “The most intriguing question about American culture today–even more intriguing than, “When and why did men start to hug each other?”–is the question Diana West tackles in this penetrating and witty book: “When and why did Americans decide to stop growing up?” Actually, I have a depressing feeling that the two questions are related.”
Yes! Men hugging each other is inherently immature and infantile! Also, I sympathise with Al Qaeda! This is psudo-intellectual drivel, and the fact that Michelle Malkin endorses West’s book should be proof enough that no rational person should read it.
I haven’t seen this : but the US has been ‘teasing’ Russia. Have you noticed the news items on their bombers roaming around foreign airspace and causing an alert in the UK ?
As my first comment on this blog, I shall take the low road and quote the Simpsons:
“The Soviet Union will pleased to offer amnesty to your wayward wessel.”
“The Soviet Union? I thought you guys broke up?”
“Yes. That’s what we wanted you to think! Muhahahaha!”
