Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off

9 Oct

Unlike the eternally optimistic Tom Friedman, Fareed Zakaria is ready to call the Iraq War a failure.  After waiting a reasonable period for some the Bush adminstration’s better tactical and strategic adjustments to be enacted and take effect, and for the Iraq government to muster the will to find a political solution, he sees no hope of a military solution (or a military aided solution).  Andrew Sullivan isn’t ready to call it quits in Iraq yet, but his appraisal of Fareed’s article pretty much says it all.  As the man says, money quote:

But if Fareed is giving in, you know it’s beyond serious.

Perhaps this may be the beginning of an intellectual tipping point for the reasonable political commentariat who supported the war and still hold out hope that a mismanaged war can be turned around.

UPDATE: Matt Yglesias thinks Andrew Sullivan is living in a fantasy world where the Bush administration would actually make the sort of changes that Sullivan would like to see in our Iraq strategy.

You know who’s gay, Andrew Sullivan. No really, this isn’t mindless homophobia. Just a statement of fact. Also, Jim Kramer is apparently quite mad.

Look, this comment has nothing to do with this post, I just find it interesting. I was just watching World News Now on ABC with two attractive female hosts, who just reported on the death of Jane Wyatt, mother from “Father Knows Best.” She also apparently portrayed Spock’s mom on TOS. One of the hosts mused: “Hmmmm, that must have been Spock’s human mother, right? I never watched the show….wouldn’t know…” This is a damned lie. She’s obviously a crypto-nerd. The other comley host also chimed in that Spock was half human and half Vulcan. “I never watched Star Trek; What would I know? Tee-Hee.” These poor women were left alone on Prom Night, and must now lie on national television to hide their horrible secret. It’s 4 a.m. in the goddamn morning! The only people awake already know you’re full of it, they have no lives! Truth in media is fading like shooting star! At least from 2 – 5 a.m.
